The Great Uyuni Salar

The great Salar de Uyuni, like any great work of nature has its varied legends. We like to tell, particularly the one born on the Andean worldview and has its origin in the Thunupa Volcano.
Legend tells that Thunupa was a beautiful lady who was married to Cuzco. Cuzco had betrayed his wife for a young girl named Cosuña. Seeing this, indignant Thunupa ran away by the sector they called Kachipampa (salt pampa) she fell there, where currently the volcano is. In this wilderness, before dying, Thunupa who had recently given birth cried with so salty tears and the milk flowed from her maternal womb, turning the place into a majestic salt flat, Salar de Thunupa, currently known as the Salar de Uyuni. Cuzco, meanwhile, stands expectantly on east of the salt flat.
With an area of 12,000 square kilometers, an altitude of 3660 meters above sea level, a thickness of 120 meters and 11 layers from 2 to 20 meters. The Salar de Uyuni is the largest world salt surface and mirror that can seen from space.
