Useful information for your trip

We want that your visit to the Salar de Uyuni and your stay with us to be a nice memory to share, that’s why we provide information we think is important for you to read before your trip or booking.

The Salar de Uyuni is characterized for having two very different seasons: Dry Season and Rainy season. For each one there are details to consider.

Dry season:
Between late april to early december.
Characteristics of the salt flat: can be crossed from side to side, between May to September the temperature ranges around 5 degrees, sometimes temperature goes under zero. Between October to December temperature improves reaching around 14 Celsius degrees.
What to wear: for the mid-winter months (May to September) preferentially wear very warm clothing and windbreaker don't forget gloves and a warm hat.

Rainy season:
Between late December to mid-April. It’s the season of "Water reflection".
Salar characteristics: During this season the Salar fills with water so for the safety of visitors and according to regulations of the Potosí department, it’s forbidden to go more than 15 km inside the salt flat. The temperature ranges around 14 Celsius degrees and the weather can be too cloudy or rainy.
What to wear: light clothing, water boots, sandals, raincoats, hat for sun protection. The hotel provides boots to lend to our guests.

General recommendations:

  • All year round you should use sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun reflection over the whiteness of the salt flat.
  • You should use enough sunblock on your face and all exposed areas to sunlight
  • Weather is very dry so it’s recommended to use hydrating body cream and a lip balm.

As the hotel information shows, it’s located at 3600 Mts above sea level, so it’s recommended to people who are not used to this altitude, before and during their stay in the place, drink lots of water and eat little because sometimes digestion is impaired by altitude.
For the same reason we don’t recommend subjecting the body to intense activities like, long walks without rest intervals.

There are many people that travel with children; the Salar de Uyuni is a 100% natural destination where there are no attractions for children. However, if your children are used to spending many hours sitting on a bus or a car don't hesitate to bring them along.

In the Salar de Uyuni area, Uyuni city and around they don’t have a central electrical net, so for this reason sometimes there might be blackouts, randomly and occasionally that can last up 12 hours or more. The hotel has a generator to provide electrical power which operates from 19:00 to 24:00 hours when electricity is more required.

The internet service provided by the hotel, because of the area where the hotel is located the internet service is via satellite. This is relevant because any weather problem like wind storms or rain can limit the service speed or cut it partially.

How to get:
Through Amazonas airline, the only pmr that has daily flights from La Paz city.

Goes from Oruro to Villazon or way back and stops in Uyuni. More information

From Potosi: direct bus trip of approximately 5 hours. Daily departs on the morning and 19:00 asphalt road.
From Oruro: direct bus trip of approximately 7 hours. Daily departs from 19:00. The road is in process of being asphalted from Challapata town.
From La Paz: bus trip of approximately 12-14 hours. Departs every night at 19:00.

Own car:

  • It’s recommended a 4x4 vehicle.
  • The only complete asphalt road is from Potosi.
  • Keep in mind that in the rainy season the roads are in poor condition.
  • It’s recommended the purchase of fuel in the bigger cities because there are no fuel stations when you go away from Uyuni.

Payment methods:

  • The most common form of payment In Uyuni is cash, also there you will find ATMs.
  • The shops are not adhered to card payment system.
  • The US dollar is accepted in all stores.
